Nigeria's Two- and Three-Wheeler Market: Changes in 2024–2025 and Outlook to 2030
Published: Thu Jul 23
Starting Point: Reviewing 2024-2025
Nigeria is Africa's largest two-wheeler market.
In 2024, the market was valued at
US$1.06 billion, with more than
800,000 motorcycles entering through official channels, and it is estimated that
200,000 units entered through informal channels. The country accounted for
42.61%.
The 2024 import data reveals a market already in transition.
Nigeria imported motorcycles and bicycles worth
US$406 million:
India: US$182 million (approximately 45%)
China: $180 million (about 44%)
Japan: $17.1 million (about 4%)
India and China are almost tied in import value. But Chinese brand unit prices are typically 20-30% lower than Indian brands, which means in terms of actual sales volume—the number of vehicles on Nigerian roads—China is already ahead.
Fuel Subsidy Shock
In May 2023, everything changed. The Nigerian government removed long-standing fuel subsidies, causing petrol prices to soar from165–185 naira per litre to 750–1,200 naira—a 4–6-fold increase. For commercial riders traveling 150-200 kilometers per day, fuel costs have jumped from 3.7 naira per kilometer to 15-20 naira, and fuel has become the largest operating expense.
This cost shock hit all players, but hurt some brands more.
Bajaj Auto, the market leader by brand awareness, saw its baseline monthly sales in Nigeria plunge from 50,000 units to fewer than 5,000 units in mid-2024—

500,000 vehicles to Nigeria every year. This sales volume became unsustainable overnight.
Meanwhile, Chinese brands absorbed the shock better.
As the ICE market is rocked by soaring fuel prices, the electric vehicle segment is starting to build momentum.

The company raised The three-wheeler market is developing more slowly than the two-wheeler market, but follows the same pattern: price pressure from Chinese brands, fuel-cost pain for operators, and early electric pilots by companies such as Spiro.
Bajaj has not yet recovered to its 2023 sales levels. Its brand recognition remains strong, but in the post-subsidy-removal and naira-devaluation environment, the cost structure can no longer support large-scale operations.
